Review: Machinarium (PC)

(4/5 stars) Machinarium is a PC point-and-click adventure. I’d like to compare it to Myst, but really it’s much better (blasphemy!) The amazing hand-drawn look and feel, along with the comedic tone, really make this game special. Did I mention there’s also robot romance? Too cute!
Many game reviewers have also pointed out the fantastic soundtrack, which you can also buy separately. While it’s true that the game’s soundtrack is perfect for this adventure, I’m not sure I’d want to listen to it all on its own.
Machinarium would easily get a 4.5 or 5 stars if it weren’t for the somewhat slow pace of walking back and forth between screens (which is a common problem with point-and-click adventures.) Even with that one minor quibble, I highly recommend Machinarium to everyone from hardcore to casual gamer.
Mario Kart: The Movie

Parentheses Fail
Posted in Rant on 04/09/2009 01:42 pm by Martin CortezI saw this sign in my local Qdoba last night and took notice of the ambiguity. The sign reads:
ADD ON
Chips and Salsa or Queso and a Regular Fountain Drink
for only $1.99
It can be interpreted in one of two ways.
Interpretation #1:
- You can have chips and salsa for two dollars, OR
- You can have queso and a soda for two dollars.
Interpretation #2:
- You can have chips, salsa, and a soda for two dollars, OR
- You can have queso and a soda for two dollars.
These are the questions that keep me up late at night. Yes, I have too much time on my hands.
Star Trek: Countdown
Posted in Books on 04/07/2009 07:28 pm by Martin CortezJust finished reading Star Trek: Countdown, the official prequel to the new Star Trek movie. Now I’m even more excited for the movie! I encourage any other trekkies out there to pick up this graphic novel. You can get it from Amazon for $12.
And once you’re done, watch the Star Trek Trailer again.
Twitscoop Scoop
Posted in Uncategorized on 04/04/2009 11:11 pm by Martin CortezI just recently learned about Twitscoop, a website that groups the most commonly used words across all twitter updates, and apparently it does this in real-time. I didn’t really think much of this until I saw the above keyword cloud tonight. The biggest words tell the story: “korea launched rocket.” This is a reference to North Korea just launching their highly anticipated missle/rocket. You know, the one that the Japanese have been fretting over (with good reason) for the last week.
The most interesting part about this particular Twitscoop cloud is that I couldn’t find a single TV mention of this event for another 10 minutes. Twitscoop has scooped the press (at least in my cable-free household.)
Tauntaun Sleeping Bag
Posted in Funny on 04/01/2009 03:41 pm by Martin CortezThis goes under the category of “Too bad it’s an April Fools’ Day joke.” This Uber-Awesome sleeping bag is waaaaay cooler than the Heinz ketchup bottle one that I used to sleep in as a kid. Love the lightsaber zipper and the tauntaun intestine lining.
Mega Shoes
Posted in Mega Man on 03/30/2009 09:06 am by Martin CortezPuma is making some sneakers that are Mega-Man themed. Now how can I pull off this look? (I fear the answer to that question is just: “no.”)
Periodic Table of Controllers
