Parentheses Fail

I saw this sign in my local Qdoba last night and took notice of the ambiguity.  The sign reads:

ADD ON

Chips and Salsa or Queso and a Regular Fountain Drink

for only $1.99

It can be interpreted in one of two ways.

Interpretation #1:

  1. You can have chips and salsa for two dollars, OR
  2. You can have queso and a soda for two dollars.

Interpretation #2:

  1. You can have chips, salsa, and a soda for two dollars, OR
  2. You can have queso and a soda for two dollars.

These are the questions that keep me up late at night.  Yes, I have too much time on my hands.

  1. surely it’s interpretation #3:
(chips and (salsa or queso) and fountain drink) for $2?

now what I wonder about is the thinking behind the red lettering choices… why is the first “and” black?
