Parentheses Fail

I saw this sign in my local Qdoba last night and took notice of the ambiguity.  The sign reads:

ADD ON

Chips and Salsa or Queso and a Regular Fountain Drink

for only $1.99

It can be interpreted in one of two ways.

Interpretation #1:

  1. You can have chips and salsa for two dollars, OR
  2. You can have queso and a soda for two dollars.

Interpretation #2:

  1. You can have chips, salsa, and a soda for two dollars, OR
  2. You can have queso and a soda for two dollars.

These are the questions that keep me up late at night.  Yes, I have too much time on my hands.

 

Loose

One of the things that drives me craziest is the incorrect usage of the word loose. How in the world did it become so common to use the word loose instead of lose? I see it all the time! In business documents, on the internet, in emails. It’s insane!

BTW, my second pet-peeve is probably the word nite. It’s not a word. It’s a cutesy abbreviation for a real word: night.
